In this weekly course, we’ll look closely at the first words, sentences, lines, and paragraphs of great works of literature.
We’ll practice close-reading skills by zooming in on important details and learning how analytical skills can be brought to bear on literary evidence. We’ll make predictions about the rest of the book based on the beginning. Works will be selected from free online editions, and there’s no need to prepare in advance. Each session will be different, but you don’t need to attend every week; join us whenever you like! This course is taught by a Columbia English professor with experience teaching middle school and high school students.
